Why is C101 so much more expensive than C110?
The price gap between C101 and C110 is driven by the refining process. C110 (ETP) is produced via electrolytic refining, which is highly efficient for mass production. C101 (OFE) requires an additional vacuum-melting stage to eliminate virtually all oxygen and trace impurities.
As we analyzed in our guide on the price of C11000 copper, the fabrication premium for C101 is typically 20-40% higher than C110. For most electrical contractors, the standard C11000 electrolytic tough pitch copper provides the best ROI for power distribution projects.
Chemical and Conductivity Comparison (C110 vs. C101)
| Property | C110 (ETP / C11000) | C101 (OFE / C10100) |
| Copper Purity (Min) | 99.90% | 99.99% |
| Oxygen Content | 0.02% - 0.04% | 0.0005% Max |
| Conductivity (IACS) | 101% | 101.5% - 102% |
| Hydrogen Embrittlement | Susceptible | Immune |
Can C110 be used for high-temperature brazing?
This is the most critical technical question for procurement. C110 contains a small amount of oxygen. If you heat it above 400°C in a hydrogen-rich atmosphere (standard in many brazing and welding processes), the hydrogen reacts with the internal oxygen to form steam. This creates microscopic cracks known as hydrogen embrittlement.
C101 is immune to this effect because it is oxygen-free. If your project involves furnace brazing or specialized welding, you must invest in C101. For air-cooled assemblies or bolted joints, the standard purity of C11000 copper is more than sufficient.

Is the electrical conductivity of C101 significantly better?
While C101 has a slightly higher conductivity rating (102% IACS vs 101% IACS), the difference is negligible for 95% of industrial power systems. In a standard transformer C11000 copper coil or switchgear busway, the energy loss difference between C110 and C101 is too small to justify the 30% price premium.
However, in C11000 copper cnc machining for high-vacuum components, the high purity of C101 is required to prevent outgassing and to ensure clean signals in precision electronics.
Application Selection Matrix
| Application | Recommended Grade | Key Reason |
| Electrical Busbars | C110 (C11000) | Best conductivity-to-cost ratio |
| Vacuum Chamber Parts | C101 (C10100) | Zero outgassing, ultra-high purity |
| HVAC Piping | C12200 / C110 | Easy forming and brazing |
| Hydrogen Furnace Brazing | C101 (C10100) | Prevents hydrogen embrittlement |
FAQ
1. Can I use T2 copper to replace C101?
No. As we explored in our guide on the international copper equivalent of C11000, T2 copper is the equivalent of C110 (ETP) and contains oxygen. It will fail in the same high-temperature hydrogen environments.
2. Is C110 harder to machine than C101?
Actually, C110 is slightly easier to machine. The small oxide particles in C110 help break the chips, whereas C101 is extremely "gummy" and ductile. If you are sourcing a C11000 copper bar , C110 often results in a better surface finish during high-speed milling.
3. Which grade is better for high-end audio cables?
Audiophiles often demand C101 because the 99.99% purity and lack of oxygen supposedly result in a "cleaner" signal. For industrial audio, C110 is the standard.
4. Is the lead time longer for C101?
Yes. We maintain a large inventory of C11000 material because it is the most common industrial grade. C101 is a niche electronic grade and often has longer production cycles unless we have specific stock available.
5. Why is C110 called "ETP" and C101 called "OFE"?
ETP stands for Electrolytic Tough Pitch (contains oxygen). OFE stands for Oxygen-Free Electronic (99.99% pure, no oxygen).
6. Can I verify the grade with a C11000 mill test certificate (MTC)?
Yes. A legitimate ISO certified C11000 manufacturer will provide an MTC that lists the oxygen content. If the oxygen is between 0.02% and 0.04%, it is C110. If it is 0.0005% or lower, it is C101.
When to Save and When to Spend
If your parts are used for general power transmission (like an electrical copper busbar) or architectural work (like a roofing C11000 copper sheet), stick with C110 to save significant costs. Only upgrade to C101 if your manufacturing involves high-vacuum environments or hydrogen atmosphere brazing.
