Bare copper oxidizes. In high-power electronics and 800V EV systems, surface oxidation creates contact resistance, which leads to I-squared R heating and potential joint failure. While C10100 Oxygen-Free Electronic (OFE) copper has an unmatched bulk conductivity of 101% IACS, its surface must be protected to maintain that performance over a 10-year service life. For a procurement manager or design engineer, the choice between silver and tin plating is a trade-off between electrical ROI and budget.
Should I silver plate my C10100 busbars to stop oxidation?
Silver provides the lowest contact resistance of any metal. When applied to an OFE copper flat bar or C10100 copper round bar, silver prevents the copper from reacting with atmospheric sulfur. Unlike copper oxide, silver oxide remains conductive, meaning your joint efficiency won't drop over time.
As a specialized C10100 copper plate supplier, we recommend silver plating for high-frequency RF components and high-current Custom CNC Machined Parts. Because C10100 is 99.99% pure and vacuum-refined to Max 5ppm oxygen, the plating adhesion is far superior to lower-grade ETP copper, which can suffer from "outgassing" under the plated layer.
Plating Specs – Silver vs. Tin on C10100
| Property | Silver Plating (Ag) | Tin Plating (Sn) | Engineering Impact |
| Contact Resistance | Lowest (Stable) | Moderate (Increases) | Silver is best for low-loss joints |
| Hardness | Soft (Risk of galling) | Soft | Silver requires careful torquing |
| Solderability | Excellent | Excellent | Both are good for 4N pure copper wire |
| Cost | High (Market Driven) | Low / Economical | Tin is the budget-friendly choice |
| Risk Factor | Tarnish (Aesthetic) | Whisker Growth | Tin requires mitigation in electronics |
Is tin plating a cheaper alternative for OFE copper?
Yes. Tin is the most common choice for ASTM F68 copper plate wholesale orders intended for industrial switchgear. It provides good corrosion protection at a fraction of the cost of silver. However, tin has a lower melting point and higher resistance. If your OFE copper sheet cut to size or C10100 thick copper board is expected to operate at temperatures above 100°C, tin can begin to oxidize and increase the joint temperature further.
Furthermore, tin is prone to "whisker" growth-microscopic metallic filaments that can cause short circuits in dense electronic housings. If you are sourcing for an OFE copper wire manufacturer, ensure the C10100 bare copper wire or 4N pure copper wire uses a matte tin finish or a nickel underplate to mitigate this risk.
Does plating affect the 101% IACS conductivity?
Plating only affects "Surface Conductivity." The bulk 101% IACS value of the C10100 Oxygen-Free Electronic copper remains unchanged. However, at high frequencies, the Skin Effect causes current to travel only on the outer layer. In these cases, a silver-plated OFE copper foil roll or oxygen-free copper tape will actually perform better than bare copper.
As discussed in our C10100 corrosion guide, the main goal of plating is to prevent the black/green oxidation that creates an insulating barrier at the connection points. Without plating, your high-purity C10100 square rod or extruded OFE copper bar will eventually overheat at the bolt holes.
Application Recommendations for Plated C10100
| Environment | Recommended Plating | Why? |

| EV Battery Tabs | Nickel or Tin | Best balance of cost and vibration resistance |
| UHV Feedthroughs | Gold or None | Prevents outgassing in high vacuum copper pipe |
| Marine / Industrial | Tin (Sn) | Best protection against chloride pitting |
FAQ
1. Can a C10100 copper plate supplier provide custom plating thicknesses?
Yes. Standard plating is 3-5 microns, but for high-wear environments, we can provide up to 10-15 microns of silver or tin on any OFE copper sheet standard sizes.
2. Is silver-plated C10100 better for laser welding?
No. Silver is highly reflective and can interfere with the laser beam. For welding, we recommend keeping the joint area bare and plating the rest of the C10100 seamless copper tube or plate after the joining process is complete.
3. How do I verify the plating quality on an oxygen free copper wire spool?
Check for adhesion and thickness consistency. A poor plating job on 4N pure copper wire will flake off during winding. We use X-ray fluorescence (XRF) to verify the thickness for every OFE copper wire manufacturer order.
4. Why did my silver-plated OFE copper flat bar turn black?
This is silver tarnish (silver sulfide). Unlike copper oxide, silver sulfide is still conductive. However, to prevent this, we ship all plated OFE copper flat bar orders in VCI packaging as detailed in our C10100 Packaging Guide.
5. Does the C10100 machinability rating change after plating?
Plating is done after machining. If you machine a plated C10100 square rod, you will expose the bare copper at the cut. Always plate the finished to ensure 100% surface protection.
6. Why use nickel as an underplate for C10100 bare copper wire?
Nickel acts as a "diffusion barrier." It prevents the copper atoms from migrating into the gold or silver top-layer, which preserves the 99.99% purity and surface conductivity over long-term high-temperature use.
