The Difference Between Cupronickel and Silver
Although cupronickel and silver appear similar, they differ significantly upon closer inspection. Cupronickel is silvery-white in color but has a lower density than silver, making it feel lighter in the hand. Furthermore, cupronickel has a crisper sound, while silver has a duller one. Most importantly, cupronickel rusts, while silver turns black when oxidized. These details can help us determine whether an item is cupronickel or silver.
Basic Properties of Cupronickel
Cupronickel is a copper-based alloy primarily composed of nickel. It possesses excellent ductility, high strength, and hardness, and is highly corrosion-resistant. As the nickel content increases, cupronickel becomes whiter, exhibiting a silvery-white metallic luster. These properties make cupronickel widely used in certain applications.
Tips for Identifying Cupronickel
1. Compare weight: For objects of the same size, silver weighs significantly more than cupronickel, and the difference can be felt by weighing them.
2. Observe hardness: Cupronickel is harder and more brittle, while silver is very ductile and easily bends. 3. Observe the craftsmanship: Crafting thinner pots with white copper is difficult, resulting in thicker walls. Silver pots, on the other hand, are relatively thin and lightweight.
4. Observe for rust: White copper will rust, and rust cannot be removed by brushing. Silver, on the other hand, will only oxidize and turn black. Wiping with a soft cloth and toothpaste will restore its original color.
5. Listen for the impact sound: White copper has a crisp sound when struck, while silver has a dull sound (this method should be used with caution to avoid damaging the item).

Applications of White Copper
Due to its excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance, white copper is widely used in high-end tea sets and decorative items. However, be sure to verify authenticity when purchasing. It is recommended to purchase from reputable platforms and suppliers to ensure product quality.
