ASTM F68 vs. ASTM B170: A Buyer’s Guide to Sourcing True C10100 OFE Copper

For procurement managers sourcing high-purity metals, purchasing C10100 Oxygen-Free Electronic (OFE) copper presents a unique supply chain risk: You cannot visually inspect purity.

A billet of standard 99.90% copper looks identical to a billet of 99.99% OFE copper. However, if the wrong grade is delivered to your engineering team for vacuum brazing or UHV applications, the entire batch will fail, resulting in catastrophic production delays and scrapped assemblies.

Decoding the Standards: B170 vs. F68

While both standards dictate high-purity copper, they serve different industrial purposes:

ASTM B170 (Standard Specification for Oxygen-Free Electrolytic Copper): This is the foundational standard covering basic oxygen-free copper shapes (like cakes, billets, and wire bars). It defines two grades: Grade 1 (C10100, 99.99% Cu) and Grade 2 (C10200, 99.95% Cu). While rigorous, it is a general material specification.

ASTM F68 (Standard Specification for OFE Copper for Electron Devices): This is the "gold standard." It is significantly stricter. F68 not only requires the 99.99% purity and max 5 ppm oxygen limit of C10100, but it also mandates stringent metallographic testing to guarantee the material is 100% immune to hydrogen embrittlement.

 

If your engineers are manufacturing MRI components, klystrons, or high-frequency electronics, specifying merely "oxygen-free copper" on your Purchase Order is dangerous. You must specify C10100 to ASTM F68.
