Chemical Composition and Core Properties
C72200 White Cup (40 White Cup) is a copper-nickel alloy with a strictly controlled chemical composition within the following range:
Copper (Cu): ≥79.3% (Cu + Ag ≥79.3% when silver is included). Serves as the base metal, providing electrical and thermal conductivity, as well as ductility.
Nickel (Ni): 15.0%–18.0% (including cobalt). Significantly improves corrosion resistance, strength, and oxidation resistance, imparting a silvery-white luster.
Iron (Fe): 0.50%–1.0%. Refines grain size, inhibits recrystallized grain growth, and improves mechanical and processing properties.
Manganese (Mn): ≤1.0%. Enhances corrosion resistance and thermal stability. Excessive amounts (>1%–2%) may cause brittleness.
Zinc (Zn): ≤1.0%. Adjusts strength and workability. Excessive amounts may reduce corrosion resistance. Lead (Pb): ≤0.05%. Trace additions can improve machinability, but must be controlled to avoid toxicity risks.
Chromium (Cr): 0.30%-0.70%. Further enhances corrosion resistance and high-temperature stability.
Physical Properties:
Density: Approximately 8.91 g/cm³, slightly higher than pure copper.
Melting Point: Higher than pure copper, stable within the industrial application temperature range.
Conductivity: Approximately 5% IACS (International Annealed Copper Standard), lower than pure copper but better than stainless steel, suitable for applications requiring moderate conductivity.
Mechanical Properties and Processability
Strength and Toughness:
Tensile Strength: 450-700 MPa (cold-drawn state can reach 890 N/mm²), yield strength approximately 250-400 MPa, significantly higher than ordinary copper.
Ductility: Elongation 15%-40% (cold-drawn state can reach 40%), allowing for complex processing such as bending, stretching, and deep drawing.
Impact Toughness: Excellent, preventing fracture and deformation, suitable for high-load environments.
Processing Performance:
Cold Working: Can be formed through processes such as cold rolling, cold drawing, and cold extrusion, achieving a high surface finish and controllable dimensional accuracy.
Hot Working: Hot rolling and forging are suitable for large or complex-shaped parts, requiring controlled heating temperatures to avoid overheating.
Weldability: Compatible with processes such as TIG and MIG welding, maintaining high strength and corrosion resistance after welding.
Corrosion Resistance
Seawater Environment: The nickel content imparts excellent seawater corrosion resistance, making it suitable for ships, offshore platforms, and seawater cooling systems.
Chemical Media: Resists corrosion from neutral salt spray, dilute sulfuric acid, and organic acids (such as formic acid and acetic acid), but is sensitive to ammonia and hydrogen sulfide.
Stress Corrosion: Inhibits chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking, extending service life.
