Principal Design Features
Copper nickel alloy with 30% nickel content. Excellent corrosion resistance, especially in marine environments. Moderately high strength, good creep resistance at elevated temperatures. Properties generally increase with nickel content. Relatively high in cost compared with copper-aluminum and other alloys with similar mechanical properties.
Applications
Copper-nickels are mainly used for seawater service as forged and machined valve and pump components, fittings and hardware. Used where high corrosion resistance is required and where concern over chloride stress-corrosion cracking prevents use of stainless steels.

FAQ
Q1: C71500 vs C70600 – which one for seawater?
C71500 has higher strength and better erosion resistance. C71500 contains 30% nickel; C70600 contains 10% nickel. For high-velocity seawater above 2.5 m/s or chloride stress-corrosion cracking concerns, choose C71500. For general marine use, C70600 is more economical.
Q2: What ASTM spec covers C71500 tube?
ASTM B111 and ASME SB111 cover C71500 seamless tube. For pipe, use ASTM B466 and ASME SB466. Military specs: MIL-T-15005 (tube) and MIL-T-16420 (pipe).
Q3: What is the machinability of C71500?
Machinability rating is 20 (free-cutting brass = 100). For C71500 bar and pipe, use sharp carbide tools, low cutting speeds, and abundant coolant.
Q4: Can C71500 be welded?
Yes, gas shielded arc welding, coated metal arc welding, spot, seam, and butt welding are all Excellent. Brazing and soldering are Excellent. Oxyacetylene welding is Good.
Q5: What is the density of C71500?
Density is 0.323 lb/in³ (8.94 g/cm³). For C71500 pipe weight: (OD - wall) × wall × 10.68 = lb/ft.
Q6: What is the annealing temperature for C71500?
Annealing temperature is 1200-1500°F (649-816°C). For hot working, use 1700-1900°F (927-1038°C).
Q7: Is C71500 resistant to chloride stress corrosion?
Yes, C71500 is used where chloride stress-corrosion cracking prevents use of stainless steels. This is a key advantage over 304 and 316 stainless steel in warm seawater service.
Q8: What forms is C71500 available in?
Flat rolled (sheet/plate), bar, tube, pipe, wire, forgings, piping components, and fasteners. 29 North American distributors stock this alloy.
Q9: What is the lead time for C71500?
10 to 50 weeks depending on size and form. Distributors offer small quantity buys; mills sell large volumes.
Q10: What military specs cover C71500?
MIL-C-15726, MIL-T-15005, MIL-T-16420, and MIL-T-22214. For naval seawater piping and condensers, specify the correct MIL spec.
