C44300 Brass vs. C46400 Brass

C44300 (Admiralty Brass): Cu-Zn-Sn alloy. It is essentially a 70/30 brass (70% Cu, 29% Zn, 1% Sn) with a small addition of Arsenic (As) or sometimes Antimony/Sb or Phosphorus/P.

C46400 (Naval Brass): Cu-Zn-Sn alloy. It is commonly known as 60/40 brass (60% Cu, 39.2% Zn, 0.8% Sn).

 

Defining Characteristic & Purpose of Tin (Sn)

C44300: The 1% Tin is added primarily to improve corrosion resistance, specifically resistance to dezincification and impingement attack in saltwater and steam condensate.

C46400: The ~1% Tin is added primarily to increase strength and hardness compared to ordinary brasses, while also offering good corrosion resistance.

 

C44300 vs. C46400

C44300: The Arsenic (As) addition (~0.02-0.10%) is critical. It acts as an inhibitor to prevent dezincification, a form of selective leaching where zinc corrodes away, leaving a porous copper structure.

C46400: It does not contain Arsenic. Its resistance to dezincification in seawater is good but generally inferior to inhibited brasses like C44300.

 

Mechanical Properties

C44300: Good strength and ductility, but its mechanical properties are secondary to its corrosion/erosion resistance.

C46400: Has higher tensile strength, yield strength, and hardness than C44300. It is a stronger, more robust structural material.

 

Corrosion Resistance

C44300: Excellent and specialized. Superior resistance to dezincification, erosion-corrosion, and biofouling in flowing seawater, brackish water, and steam condensate. The arsenic inhibits the corrosion mechanism.

C46400: Very good general corrosion resistance in marine environments. Strong against saltwater corrosion, but more susceptible to dezincification than inhibited admiralty brass in stagnant or slow-moving water.

 

Primary Applications

C44300: Almost exclusively used for heat exchanger and condenser tubes, tube sheets, and other components in marine, power plant, and desalination plant systems where heat transfer and long-term corrosion resistance are paramount.

C46400: Used for a wide variety of marine hardware and structural components. Common applications include propeller shafts, pump shafts, valve stems, fasteners, bolts, nuts, marine fittings, and other high-strength parts in contact with seawater.
