Applying a surface finish to C10100 Oxygen-Free Electronic copper is a balancing act. If the plating process is poorly controlled, you risk hydrogen embrittlement or metallic contamination that nullifies the 101% IACS conductivity you paid for.
Whether you are preparing components for a satellite transponder or a UHV vacuum chamber, the goal of surface treatment is to protect the copper without introducing resistive oxide layers.
Why is silver plating the preferred finish for C10100 high-frequency components?
Silver has the highest electrical conductivity of all metals, even exceeding C10100. When you plate C10100 Foil with silver, you are optimizing the component for the Skin Effect.
At high frequencies, the current flows primarily on the outer "skin" of the conductor. A high-quality silver plate (typically ASTM B700 compliant) ensures that the signal encounters the lowest possible resistance. For silver plating to be effective on OFE copper, a "cyanide-free" or "low-stress" bath is required to prevent hydrogen from diffusing into the copper lattice, a risk we detailed in our guide on C10100 machining and surface integrity.
Should you choose gold or silver for C10100 vacuum components?
The choice between gold and silver depends on the environment:
Gold Plating (MIL-DTL-45204): Best for components that will not be moved or serviced frequently. Gold provides superior corrosion resistance and does not tarnish. However, gold can be brittle if plated directly onto copper; a nickel underlayer is often used, but be aware that nickel is magnetic and can interfere with sensitive electronics.
Silver Plating: Best for vacuum integrity. Silver does not outgas significantly and provides excellent solderability.
When we deliver Custom CNC Machined Parts, we recommend a "strike" layer of high-purity copper before the final gold or silver plate to ensure maximum adhesion and thermal stability.
| Treatment Type | Standard | Primary Benefit | Common Application |
| Silver Plating | ASTM B700 | Max Conductivity | 5G Cavity Filters, Waveguides |
| Gold Plating | MIL-G-45204 | Zero Corrosion | Aerospace Connectors, PCB Pads |
| Passivation | ASTM B281 | Prevents Tarnish | Storage, General Busbars |
| Electropolishing | Custom | Mirror Finish | UHV Vacuum Chambers (Low Outgassing) |

How does passivation protect C10100 without affecting its conductivity?
Passivation is a chemical process (typically using a mild acid wash) that removes free iron and surface contaminants, creating a microscopic, inert oxide film.
For C10100, passivation is critical after CNC machining to remove any trace elements from the cutting tools. This process does not change the dimensions of the part but prevents the copper from turning green (verdigris) during transit or storage. It is a cost-effective alternative to plating for global equivalent grades like CW009A that need to meet strict international delivery standards.
How to prepare C10100 surfaces for vacuum brazing?
Before brazing, the surface must be chemically clean. Any residue from machining oils will carbonize in the furnace, leading to a "leaky" joint.
We recommend a three-step preparation:
Solvent Degrease: Removes bulk oils.
Electro-cleaning: Removes embedded particulates.
Bright Dip: A brief immersion in an oxidizing acid to reveal the pristine 99.99% pure copper structure.
By ensuring the surface is as pure as the core metal, you guarantee a hermetic seal that meets the highest aerospace and medical standards.
