Copper tubes are widely used in air conditioning refrigerant pipelines due to their high thermal conductivity, corrosion resistance and processing performance. Copper tubes can withstand greater working pressure, have a longer service life, and are superior to other materials in cooling effect, so they have become the preferred material for air conditioning systems.
Why do air conditioners use copper tubes instead of stainless steel tubes?

Thermal conductivity crushing
The thermal conductivity of copper is 25 times that of stainless steel, and the refrigerant can instantly complete heat exchange when it flows through the copper tube. This high-efficiency heat conduction directly determines the cooling speed of the air conditioner, and the "insulation" property of stainless steel is actually a disadvantage in the refrigeration system.
Ductility rescue construction
When the installer manually bends the copper tube at the corner of the wall, the copper tube will only deform but not crack. If the stainless steel tube encounters this situation, it is very easy to produce metal fatigue cracks, and the risk of refrigerant leakage in the later stage will increase sharply, and repairing it once is equal to the cost of replacing a new machine.

Surface protection comes with armor
After the surface of the copper tube is oxidized, a dense oxide film is generated to prevent further corrosion, and the interior remains smooth after twenty years of use. Stainless steel is prone to intergranular corrosion in a humid salt spray environment, especially in the external unit connection pipe section of high-rise residential buildings in coastal cities. This situation is particularly fatal.
Cost is not the only obstacle
Although stainless steel materials are about 30% cheaper, their processing requires complex processes such as laser welding. The equipment investment for a set of stainless steel pipe production line is 8 times that of copper pipes, and weld flaw detection must be performed after bending, so the overall production cost is higher.

Comparison of copper pipes used in air conditioners and other materials
| Comparison Item | Copper Pipe | Aluminum Pipe | Galvanized Steel Pipe | PVC Pipe |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thermal Conductivity | Excellent (401 W/(m·K)) | Moderate (237 W/(m·K)) | Poor (50 W/(m·K)) | Very poor (0.19 W/(m·K)) |
| Corrosion Resistance | Naturally corrosion-resistant | Forms oxide layer, may corrode | Rusts when coating damaged | Chemically resistant but brittle |
| Mechanical Strength | High ductility, pressure-resistant | Soft, prone to deformation | Rigid but cannot bend | Low strength |
| Seal Integrity | Excellent welded joints | Requires special welding | Depends on flange connections | Glue joints may leak |
| Installation | Lightweight, easy to work with | Light but needs special tools | Heavy, complex installation | Light but fragile |
| Applications | Refrigerant lines, high-pressure | Low-pressure refrigerant | Water circulation systems | Drainage only |
| Lifespan | 20-30 years | 10-15 years | 5-10 years | 5-10 years |
| Environmental Impact | Fully recyclable | Recyclable but degrades | High maintenance pollution | Non-degradable |
| Cost | Higher cost | Lowest cost | Moderate cost | Lowest cost |
