When procurement teams ask "what is the price of C11000 copper?" the honest answer is: it depends on what shape you need. C11000 (Cu-ETP, electrolytic tough pitch) is the world's most widely traded industrial copper grade, but the price your supplier quotes has three distinct layers - and only one of them moves with the LME cathode ticker. The other two are quietly driving the gap between offers that look identical on paper.

 

With LME 3-month copper settling at $14,378.5 per tonne on September 4, 2026 (up 15.2% year-to-date), and SHFE copper 2610 closing at 109,290 yuan per tonne, the global C11000 benchmark has rarely been more visible. What is less visible is the $300–$3,000 spread that separates a wire-rod order from a precision copper-strip order - and the question every procurement manager should be asking their supplier today.

 

What C11000 Actually Means

C11000 is the unified numbering system (UNS) designation for Electrolytic Tough Pitch copper (Cu-ETP), the industry baseline for high-conductivity commercial copper. Its minimum copper content is 99.90%, with oxygen controlled between roughly 0.02% and 0.04%. That oxygen is the reason it is called "tough pitch" - it is the residual oxygen level left over after electrolytic refining, and it gives the metal its characteristic combination of high conductivity (~101% IACS) and good formability.

 

C11000 corresponds to the Chinese national standard grade T2 (per GB/T 5231) and to EN-grade Cu-ETP (per EN 1976). For procurement teams working across borders, this triple-equivalence matters: a drawing that calls for C11000, T2, or Cu-ETP is asking for the same underlying material, and the mill test certificate should confirm the same chemistry regardless of which label is used.

Note on C11000 vs C12200: C12200 (DHP, deoxidized high-phosphorus) is the alternative grade specified when the part will be brazed or exposed to hydrogen-containing atmospheres at elevated temperature. C11000 is unsuitable for those applications because residual oxygen can cause hydrogen embrittlement or blistering at the joint. Make sure your drawing specifies the correct grade for the assembly process - a substitution in either direction is a real engineering risk.

 

The Three-Layer Pricing Formula

Layer 1 is global and transparent. Layer 2 reflects local supply/demand. Layer 3 is where the largest spread between competing quotes lives - and where the most negotiation room exists.

Layer 1 - The LME cathode benchmark

The London Metal Exchange publishes daily official cash and 3-month prices for Grade A electrolytic copper cathode, the physical shape that all other C11000 products start from. This is the single global reference price that moves every business day, and it is what your supplier's contract almost certainly references. As of the September 4, 2026 close, the LME 3-month price stood at $14,378.5 per tonne, with the cash premium over 3-month holding above $10 per tonne - a sign of near-term physical tightness.

 

Layer 2 - The regional premium

Cathode cannot be used directly in most applications; it has to be fabricated into wire rod, billet, bar, or slab before any drawing, rolling, or extrusion can happen. The cost of getting cathode from a warehouse to a fabricator - including freight, insurance, financing, and any local import duty - is the regional premium. In Asia this is typically quoted against SHFE, with current spot #1 copper cathode premia running around 200–380 yuan per tonne (averaging ~290 yuan per tonne on September 4). Layer 3 - The product-form conversion premium

Converting cathode into finished C11000 product requires energy (typically natural gas or electric induction furnaces), labor, tooling wear, scrap recovery systems, quality testing, and increasingly, environmental controls. Why The Spread Between Forms Matters To You

A buyer of 8 mm copper wire rod and a buyer of precision 0.5 mm copper strip are both paying for "C11000," but their invoices could differ by $2,500 per tonne for the same underlying metal. Three factors drive that gap.

 

Yield loss and scrap recovery. Wire rod is a single-pass hot-rolled product with very high yield (typically 98%+). Precision strip is cold-rolled through multiple stands to tight tolerances, with yield losses at every edge-trim and anneal step. More processing steps mean more scrap back into the melt shop - and more cost absorbed by the prime material.

 

Temper and hardness specification. Achieving C11000 H02 (half-hard) versus H04 (full-hard) versus O60 (soft annealed) requires different cold-reduction schedules and intermediate anneals. Each temper switch costs energy and cycle time, and shows up in the premium. A drawing that specifies temper by hardness range rather than by name gives the supplier flexibility to choose the cheapest compliant route.

 

Tolerance and surface finish. A busbar plate with ±0.5 mm thickness tolerance is a different product from a connector strip with ±0.02 mm tolerance and a mirror finish. Tighter tolerances require more frequent mill setup, more in-line gauging, and higher rejection rates.

UNS designation (C11000), not just "pure copper" or "T2"

Temper code (O60, H00, H01, H02, H04, etc.) per ASTM B601 or equivalent

LME reference - which LME price is being used, and what fixing date applies

Premium components - regional premium and conversion premium itemized, not bundled

Form, size, and tolerance per the relevant ASTM / EN / GB standard (for example, ASTM B49 for wire rod, ASTM B280 for seamless tube, ASTM B36 for strip)

Mill test certificate confirming Cu content, oxygen content, conductivity, and mechanical properties

Minimum order quantity and any tooling or setup surcharge for non-standard sizes

 

Practical Tips For C11000 Procurement In A High-Price Market

Lock the LME reference, not the absolute price. A contract that fixes the premium but floats against LME protects both sides from one-sided risk. The premium is where your real relationship with the supplier lives.

 

Match the grade to the assembly process. C11000 is right for electrical busbar, wire, transformer winding, and general sheet metal. If your part will be brazed, welded in a reducing atmosphere, or used for refrigeration tubing, ask whether C12200 (DHP) is the safer specification.

 

Standardize tempers across drawings. Switching between H02 and H04 for the same part forces a separate production run. Consolidating temper requirements across your part family can cut conversion-premium costs by single-digit percentages.

 

Watch the September 30 US tariff deadline. US copper tariffs remain a wild card. If you ship into North America, ask your supplier how their C11000 sourcing path changes if a tariff is announced, and whether they can offer bonded-warehouse or third-country options to preserve margin.

 

Validate the MTC, not just the price. A sub-grade or off-spec C11000 will pass visual inspection but fail in conductivity testing, ultrasonic testing, or service. The mill test certificate is the only document that proves you are buying what you are paying for.
