Like a water heater's respiratory system, the heat exchanger is responsible for energy conversion and transmission, and its importance is self-evident.  A Visual Comparison of Copper and Stainless Steel

"Seeing is believing" isn't always the best answer. We often tend to make judgments based on surface appearances. However, this intuitive understanding can sometimes be inaccurate. Take the heat exchanger in a water heater, for example. While stainless steel may appear shiny and attractive, its performance and lifespan may be subpar. In contrast, copper heat exchangers excel in energy conversion and transmission, making them an ideal choice for high-quality water heaters. Therefore, when choosing a water heater, we shouldn't simply judge based on appearance; we should thoroughly understand its inherent qualities and performance.

Copper's Durability and Practical Examples

Copper may develop a patina after prolonged use, often leading people to mistakenly believe that copper is less corrosion-resistant than stainless steel. Similarly, while stainless steel may appear durable and give the impression of longevity, copper actually has a longer lifespan. To verify this, let's look at real-life examples. At Shanghai's Pudong Development Bank, HSBC, and Ruijin Hotel, copper water pipes installed a century ago remain intact, fully demonstrating copper's durability.

Corrosion Issues in Heat Exchangers

Corrosion issues in heat exchangers primarily arise from two sources. First, sulfur (SO2) and nitrogen oxides in flue gas. Excessive concentrations of these substances can corrode heat exchangers. Experts point out that in the past, when water heaters used manufactured gas, corrosion was a prominent issue due to its high sulfur content. However, with natural gas becoming the mainstream, sulfur and nitrogen oxide content has significantly decreased, making corrosion issues essentially negligible. Furthermore, the flow of water within heat exchanger tubes can also cause corrosion. Copper exhibits superior corrosion resistance, especially against the chlorine disinfection method commonly used in China's water treatment system. Copper resists corrosion better than stainless steel in chloride-rich water.

Cost and Environmental Considerations

Currently, the market price of oxygen-free copper is approximately 50,000 yuan per ton, while 304 stainless steel costs only around 20,000 yuan per ton. Some companies may choose stainless steel over copper due to cost considerations, but this is often a stopgap measure, not a long-term solution. Rinnai, for example, uses high-purity marine-grade oxygen-free copper with a purity of up to 99.99%. According to materials expert Liu, the core function of a heat exchanger is to efficiently and quickly transfer heat from the flame to the water. Copper offers significant advantages in this regard, with a thermal conductivity of nearly 400, compared to stainless steel's mere 17 – a significant difference. While stainless steel heat exchangers attempt to compensate for this difference by increasing the heating surface area, the actual performance is still far inferior. Furthermore, copper's ductility and weldability far surpass stainless steel in terms of workability, and it also offers superior resistance to thermal shock.

Furthermore, copper is a 100% recyclable, environmentally friendly material, while stainless steel can only be recycled as scrap metal. Therefore, from a sustainable and environmental perspective, copper heat exchangers are undoubtedly the wiser choice.
