What are the differences between C44300 Admiralty Brass and C46400 Brass?

UNS C44300 Admiralty Brass Tube PDF

Admiralty Brass (C44300) vs. Naval Brass (C46400)

Admiralty Brass (UNS C44300) and Naval Brass (UNS C46400) are two widely used copper alloys in marine and industrial applications. Both alloys belong to the brass family (copper-zinc alloys) and contain tin for improved corrosion resistance. However, their chemical compositions, mechanical properties, and primary applications differ significantly due to distinct metallurgical designs.

Chemical Composition and Key Features

Admiralty Brass (C44300):

Composition: Nominally 71% Cu, 28% Zn, 1% Sn, with a critical addition of 0.02–0.10% arsenic (As) or similar inhibitor (e.g., Sb, P).

Key Feature: The arsenic addition serves as a dezincification inhibitor. This alloy is specifically designed to resist selective leaching of zinc in stagnant or slow-moving seawater and steam condensate.

Structure: Single alpha (α) phase structure, providing good ductility and cold workability.

Naval Brass (C46400):

Composition: Nominally 60% Cu, 39% Zn, 1% Sn. It does not contain intentional arsenic or other dezincification inhibitors.

Key Feature: Higher zinc content gives it a two-phase alpha-beta (α-β) structure, resulting in higher strength and better hot workability compared to single-phase brasses.

Focus: Optimized for mechanical strength and general corrosion resistance in marine environments.

Typical Applications

Admiralty Brass (C44300):

Primary Use: Heat exchanger and condenser tubes in marine, power generation (especially coastal plants), petrochemical, and desalination industries.

Examples: Surface condensers, evaporator and distiller tubes, oil cooler tubes.

Naval Brass (C46400):

Primary Use: Marine hardware and structural components requiring strength and corrosion resistance.

Examples: Propeller shafts, pump shafts, valve stems, nuts, bolts, marine fittings, bushings, and architectural trim in marine environments.

Selection Guidelines

Choose Admiralty Brass (C44300) when:

The application involves thin-walled tubing for heat exchange.

The service environment includes stagnant, slow-moving, or brackish water (high risk of dezincification).

Corrosion resistance is the primary design criterion over tensile strength.

Choose Naval Brass (C46400) when:

The component is a load-bearing part (shaft, fitting, fastener) subject to mechanical stress.

The environment is freely flowing, clean seawater.

Good machinability or hot workability (forging) is required.
