Differences and Applications of H59 and H62 Brass

Among commonly used brass grades, H59 and H62 are widely used due to their balance of performance and cost. Understanding the core differences between the two is crucial for correct material selection and ensuring project quality.

Core Difference: Composition Determines Performance

The numbers in the H59 and H62 grades represent their average copper content percentage. This difference in composition directly leads to differences in their microstructure and properties.

H59 Brass: Contains approximately 59% copper and 41% zinc. Its high zinc content classifies it as (α+β) duplex brass. This structure results in higher strength and hardness, and better wear resistance, but slightly inferior ductility and cold workability.

H62 Brass: Contains approximately 62% copper and 38% zinc. It is closer to the boundary of (α+β) duplex brass. The increased copper content gives it better ductility, ductility, and cold workability, while maintaining good strength, resulting in a more balanced overall mechanical property.

In short: H59 is more "rigid," emphasizing strength and wear resistance; H62 is more "flexible," balancing strength with good machinability.

Application Scenarios

Matching Based on Shape and Performance
Different material shapes (bars, plates, tubes) amplify their performance characteristics, making them suitable for different applications.

1. Brass Bars

H59 Brass Bars: Due to their high strength and hardness, they are commonly used to manufacture mechanical parts that withstand heavy loads and friction, such as gears, bushings, bolts, nuts, and other standard and structural components.

H62 Brass Bars: Their excellent overall performance makes them widely used in general-purpose parts requiring a certain strength and potentially involving cold working (such as turning and forging).

2. Brass Sheets

H62 Brass Sheets: Their excellent ductility and stamping properties are fully utilized, making them an ideal choice for complex cold-stamped and deep-drawn parts. They are widely used in electrical appliance housings, heat sinks, cartridge cases, decorative parts, and precision instrument parts.

H59 Brass Sheet: Primarily used for sheet metal parts where high hardness and wear resistance are required, but the forming complexity is not critical.

3. Brass Tubing

Brass tubing (common grades such as H62 and H68) is widely used in water supply and drainage systems, heat exchangers, and air conditioning refrigeration piping due to its excellent thermal conductivity, corrosion resistance, and machinability. H62 brass tubing, in particular, achieves a good balance between strength and formability, making it a common choice for piping applications.

Summary of Material Selection Considerations

When selecting H59 or H62, the following principles can be followed:

Prioritize Performance Requirements:

If the core requirements of the project are high strength, high hardness, and wear resistance, and the processing mainly involves hot working or simple cutting, H59 should be prioritized.

If the project requires complex cold stamping, bending, or deep drawing, or requires the material to possess both good strength and ductility, H62 should be prioritized.

Considering processing methods:

Bar stock prioritizes load-bearing capacity and structure, making H59 a clear advantage; plate stock prioritizes forming, making H62 the preferred choice.

Pipe stock generally focuses on corrosion resistance and thermal conductivity, commonly using grades H62 and higher (such as H68).

Cost assessment:

Generally, H59 has a higher zinc content, resulting in a slightly lower raw material cost. Provided performance requirements are met, it can be considered an economical choice.

In short, H59 and H62 are not inherently superior or inferior, but rather each has its specific applicable areas. Clearly defining the project's mechanical performance requirements, processing technology, and end-use environment allows for an accurate and efficient selection between these two "stars" of brass.
