Copper Tube Types K vs L vs M
Copper tubes used in plumbing, HVAC and refrigeration are classified under ASTM B88 (seamless copper water tube) into three wall-thickness types - K, L and M. For the same nominal size, the types differ only in wall thickness: K is the thickest, L is medium, and M is the thinnest. Because working pressure for a given outside diameter rises with wall thickness, the choice of type is essentially a choice between pressure capacity and cost.
Wall Thickness Comparison (ASTM B88)
| Nominal size | Type K wall (in / mm) | Type L wall (in / mm) | Type M wall (in / mm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1/2″ (15 mm) | 0.049 / 1.24 | 0.040 / 1.02 | 0.028 / 0.71 |
| 3/4″ (22 mm) | 0.065 / 1.65 | 0.045 / 1.14 | 0.032 / 0.81 |
| 1″ (28 mm) | 0.065 / 1.65 | 0.050 / 1.27 | 0.035 / 0.89 |
Working Pressure
For the same outside diameter, the thicker wall gives Type K the highest internal working pressure and Type M the lowest. In practice: Type K is used where pressure, impact resistance and underground burial matter; Type L covers most general plumbing; Type M is acceptable for typical residential supply lines at moderate pressure. Never select a type solely on price - verify the working pressure against the design pressure of the system.

Typical Applications
| Type | Wall | Typical applications |
|---|---|---|
| K | Thickest | Underground service lines, high-pressure systems, commercial and industrial plumbing |
| L | Medium | General indoor plumbing, hot water lines, gas distribution, HVAC piping |
| M | Thinnest | Residential water supply, moderate-pressure indoor service |
Temper and Workability
Temper describes the mechanical state: annealed (soft) tube is produced by heating above the recrystallization temperature and cooling, giving high ductility for bending and flaring; drawn (hard) tube is work-hardened by cold drawing, giving higher strength but less bendability. Annealing softens copper; cold working hardens it - the two are opposite processes. For tight-radius bends, use annealed tube; for straight, high-pressure runs, drawn tube may be specified.
Joining and Corrosion
Copper tube is joined by soldering, brazing or press fittings. Soldering requires clean surfaces, flux and even heat on the fitting; brazing gives stronger joints for larger sizes. Copper's corrosion resistance comes from its self-repairing oxide film, but aggressive water chemistry (low pH, high chloride) can cause pitting or erosion; select the tube type and fittings to the water quality. For drinking-water systems, the piping materials must comply with the applicable water-contact regulations (for example NSF/ANSI 61 in the US or the relevant national standard), rather than relying on a general claim of safety.
Under ASTM B88, Type K is the thickest and strongest wall for underground and high-pressure service, Type L is the medium-wall general-purpose choice for indoor plumbing and gas, and Type M is the thinnest, cost-effective type for residential water supply at moderate pressure. Match the type to the system's working pressure and installation conditions, verify the pressure rating from the standard, and comply with local drinking-water regulations.

copper product packaging
To ensure every copper product you order receives reliable protection throughout transportation and storage, we provide systematic professional packaging solutions based on product type and shipping requirements. These include export-standard wooden crates, moisture-proof reinforced cartons, steel-structure pallet bundling, stretch film protection, and specialized end caps for tubing. Each batch of products undergoes cleaning and anti-rust treatment, followed by layered isolation wrapping using materials such as anti-rust paper, polyethylene foam, and bubble wrap to effectively prevent scratches and impacts. We also offer nitrogen-filled modified atmosphere packaging upon customer request, where inert nitrogen is injected into a sealed environment to significantly inhibit oxidation and moisture erosion. This is particularly suitable for copper materials with high surface quality requirements, long-term storage, or special environmental transportation, ensuring the products maintain their factory-level finish and performance upon arrival. All packaging is clearly labeled and accompanied by complete shipping documentation to ensure full traceability and ease of handling throughout the logistics process.
