What Is C71500
UNS C71500 copper-nickel alloy is suitable for applications where stainless steel cannot be used due to chloride stress corrosion cracking, as well as other components requiring high corrosion resistance. These alloys are also used to manufacture machined and forged parts for valves and pumps used in seawater environments. C71500 is commonly called copper-nickel 70/30 because it contains about 30 percent nickel.
Chemical Composition
The nominal composition is copper 70.0 percent and nickel 30.0 percent, with small controlled additions of iron and manganese. The small iron content, up to about 1 percent, gives the alloy extraordinary resistance to general corrosion and stress corrosion cracking, making it very suitable for marine and industrial applications.
Physical Properties
Density is 8.94 g per cubic centimeter, and the melting point is about 1171 degrees C. The alloy is non-magnetic with a single-phase solid solution microstructure.
Mechanical Properties
The ultimate tensile strength is 372 to 517 MPa, and the yield strength ranges from 88 to 483 MPa depending on temper. Elongation at break is 45 percent, Charpy impact is about 107 J, and machinability is 20 percent of free-cutting brass. Elastic modulus is 150 GPa, shear modulus 57 GPa, and Poisson's ratio 0.34.
