ASTM B111 C68700 Aluminum Brass Overview

ASTM B111 Copper Tube PDF

Chemical Composition

ASTM B111 C68700 is an aluminum brass material standard with the following characteristics

Copper (Cu) content is 76.0%-79.0%. Copper is the primary component of the alloy and plays a significant role in the material's electrical and thermal conductivity, as well as its basic strength.
Zinc (Zn) forms the remainder, forming an alloy with copper to further enhance the material's toughness and machinability.
Aluminum (Al) content is 1.8%-2.5%. The addition of aluminum improves the material's hardness and corrosion resistance.
A small amount of lead (Pb), ≤0.07%, can improve the material's machinability to a certain extent, but excessive lead content can adversely affect its mechanical properties. Iron (Fe) content is ≤0.06%, and arsenic (As) content is 0.02%-0.06%.

Performance Characteristics

Good corrosion resistance: Excellent resistance to corrosive media such as seawater, saline solutions, and acid solutions. In a seawater environment, a dense protective oxide layer forms on the material's surface, effectively resisting corrosion from the seawater. This makes it suitable for use in desalination plants, heat exchangers and condensers on offshore platforms, and submarine pipelines.
High Strength: High tensile strength provides excellent load-bearing capacity, making it suitable for applications subject to certain pressures and loads.
Excellent Processability: Easy to cold-work, it can be formed into various shapes, such as straight and curved, to meet the needs of diverse applications.
Excellent Thermal and Electrical Conductivity: This makes it promising for use in equipment requiring these properties, such as heat exchangers and condensers.

Applications

Primarily used in the manufacture of pipe fittings for condensers, evaporators, and heat exchangers, it can also be used in distillation piping, among other applications.

In summary, ASTM B111 C68700 aluminum brass tubing is a high-performance material with a wide range of applications in the chemical, refrigeration, and marine engineering sectors.

C68700 vs C44300: What's the Difference?

Although both C68700 and C44300 are widely used for condenser and heat exchanger tubes, they are designed for different cooling water conditions.

Property C68700 Aluminum Brass C44300 Admiralty Brass
UNS Number C68700 C44300
Main Alloying Element Aluminum Tin
ASTM Standard ASTM B111 ASTM B111
Corrosion Resistance Excellent Good
Seawater Resistance Excellent Moderate
Erosion Resistance Excellent Good
Thermal Conductivity Excellent Excellent
Biofouling Resistance Better Moderate
Typical Service Life Longer in seawater Better in clean cooling water
Typical Applications Seawater condensers, desalination, marine heat exchangers Freshwater condensers, refinery heat exchangers, HVAC systems

How to Choose Between C68700 and C44300

Application Recommended Alloy Reason
Seawater Condensers C68700 Superior resistance to seawater corrosion and erosion
Marine Cooling Systems C68700 Better durability in chloride-rich environments
Desalination Plants C68700 Longer service life in seawater
Freshwater Heat Exchangers C44300 Excellent performance with lower material cost
HVAC Equipment C44300 Suitable for clean cooling water systems
General Industrial Condensers Depends on Water Quality Select according to corrosion conditions and budget

If the cooling medium contains seawater or high chloride levels, C68700 is generally the better choice. For clean freshwater cooling systems where cost is an important factor, C44300 provides reliable performance.
