Admiralty Brass (C44300) vs. Copper-Nickel Alloys(C70600)

UNS C44300 Admiralty Brass Tube PDF

What is ASTM B111 C44300 copper tubing?

Admiralty Brass (C44300) and Copper-Nickel alloys (commonly 90/10 Cu-Ni or 70/30 Cu-Ni) are both used in marine and industrial heat exchange and piping systems, but they belong to different alloy families and offer distinct corrosion resistance profiles. C44300 is a dezincification-resistant brass, while Cu-Ni alloys are single-phase solid solutions prized for superior corrosion and biofouling resistance.

Key Comparison Table

Property / Characteristic Admiralty Brass (C44300) Copper-Nickel 90/10 (C70600)
Alloy Family Arsenic-inhibited brass (Cu-Zn-Sn-As) Copper-nickel (Cu-Ni-Fe-Mn)
Nominal Composition 71% Cu, 28% Zn, 1% Sn, 0.04% As 88% Cu, 10% Ni, 1.5% Fe, 0.5% Mn
Key Corrosion Feature Inhibited against dezincification by arsenic. Resistant to impingement attack. Superior general seawater corrosion resistance. Highly resistant to stress corrosion cracking & biofouling. Forms a stable, protective surface oxide film.
Mechanical Strength Moderate. Tensile: ~380 MPa. Higher. Tensile: ~310 MPa (Annealed) to 520 MPa (Hard). More resistant to erosion.
Thermal Conductivity Higher (~111 W/m·K). Better for heat transfer efficiency in clean, non-fouling conditions. Lower (~50 W/m·K). Reduces heat transfer efficiency but offers other advantages.
Maximum Service Velocity (Seawater) Moderate (~2-3 m/s). Prone to erosion at higher velocities. Very High (up to 5 m/s or more). Excellent erosion-corrosion resistance.
Biofouling Resistance Moderate. Can support microbial and macro-fouling. Excellent. Nickel content deters marine organism attachment.
Galvanic Position More anodic (less noble). Can act as a sacrificial partner to Cu-Ni in some conditions. More cathodic (more noble). Can accelerate corrosion of less noble metals if coupled.
Primary Application Focus Condenser & heat exchanger tubes in power plants, ships (fresh, brackish, clean seawater). Seawater piping systems, condensers, offshore platform tubing, ship hulls. Broad seawater service.
Cost Lower initial cost. Higher initial material cost.

Detailed Performance Analysis

Corrosion Resistance in Seawater:

C44300 excels in specific conditions: its arsenic addition makes it highly resistant to dezincification, a common failure mode for brasses in stagnant or slow-moving water. However, it remains vulnerable to ammonia attack (stress corrosion cracking) and has only moderate resistance to high-velocity seawater.

Cu-Ni (C70600) offers broad-spectrum, superior corrosion resistance in seawater. Its nickel and iron content promotes the formation of a tight, adherent, and protective oxide film that resists a wide range of attacks, including:

Erosion-corrosion at high flow velocities.

Stress corrosion cracking.

Marine biofouling (the nickel content is a natural biocide).

Thermal and Mechanical Performance:

Heat Transfer: C44300 has nearly double the thermal conductivity of 90/10 Cu-Ni. This makes it more thermally efficient in theory, but only if the tubes remain clean. Cu-Ni's fouling resistance often leads to more consistent long-term performance.

Strength and Erosion Resistance: Cu-Ni alloys are stronger and significantly more resistant to erosion from sand, silt, and high-velocity water. This allows for thinner tube walls and higher design velocities.

Application Environments:

Choose Admiralty Brass (C44300) when: The application is primarily heat exchangers or condensers using cooling water that is fresh, brackish, or clean seawater with controlled velocity. It is a cost-effective solution where dezincification is the primary concern and water conditions are not highly aggressive.

Choose Copper-Nickel (C70600) when: The service involves full-strength seawater, especially with high flow rates, sand/silt content, or high biofouling potential. It is the standard for seawater piping, offshore applications, ship hull sheathing, and condensers in harsh marine environments where reliability and long life are critical.

The choice is rarely about which is "better," but which is more appropriate for the specific water chemistry, flow conditions, and total cost of ownership. Admiralty Brass is a specialized, cost-effective solution for controlled water conditions. Copper-Nickel is a premium, versatile engineering material for demanding, full-seawater service where long-term reliability outweighs initial cost. For the most aggressive conditions (e.g., high sand content), 70/30 Copper-Nickel (C71500) would be an even more robust choice than 90/10.
