What Is C12200 Copper Tube?
C12200 is a deoxidized high-phosphorus (DHP) copper tube. The phosphorus content – held between 0.015% and 0.040% – removes oxygen from the copper during melting. That small addition makes a big difference: regular copper without deoxidation (like C11000) can become brittle and crack when you weld or braze it. C12200 doesn't have that problem. It's been the standard choice for water supply lines, refrigerant circuits, fuel oil systems, and compressed air for decades. Not because it's the cheapest, but because it fails less often.

Export Case : Canada – ASTM B88 Large Diameter Custom Copper Tube
We recently completed an export order of C12200 copper tube to Canada. The product was strictly manufactured according to ASTM B88 standard and is a large diameter, non-standard custom tube, used in the main water supply system of a local commercial building.

Dimensions, Tolerances, Hardness & K/L/M Wall Thickness Series
Outside Diameter (OD) & Length
| Parameter | Standard Range | Custom |
|---|---|---|
| OD | 6mm – 219mm | Up to 273mm |
| Straight Length | 1m – 6m | 0.5m – 12m |
| Coil Length | 15m – 50m | Up to 100m |
K/L/M Wall Thickness Series (ASTM B88)
In copper tube for plumbing and HVAC, K, L, M indicate wall thickness. K is thickest, M is thinnest.
| Series | Wall Thickness | Typical Application |
|---|---|---|
| Type K | Thickest | Underground water mains, high-pressure steam, oil lines, code-required heavy duty |
| Type L | Medium | Standard residential/commercial plumbing, HVAC refrigerant lines, potable water |
| Type M | Thinnest | Low-pressure heating, drain lines, radiant heating (not for refrigerant) |
Actual wall thickness example – 1/2″ (12.7mm) OD:
| Series | Wall (mm) | Wall (inch) | Weight per meter (kg/m) |
|---|---|---|---|
| K | 1.24 | 0.049 | 0.40 |
| L | 1.02 | 0.040 | 0.33 |
| M | 0.81 | 0.032 | 0.27 |
For air conditioning refrigerant lines, Type L is the industry standard. Type K is overkill for most AC work unless code requires it or lines are underground. Type M is not recommended for refrigerant – too thin.
Tolerances (ASTM B75)
| Parameter | Tolerance |
|---|---|
| OD ≤ 25mm | ±0.05mm |
| OD 25–50mm | ±0.10mm |
| OD > 50mm | ±0.15mm |
| Wall thickness | ±10% |
Hardness Reference
| Temper | HRF | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Soft (Annealed) | 40–65 | Bending, flaring, refrigerant linesets |
| Half-Hard | 65–85 | General plumbing, some bendability |
| Hard (Drawn) | ≥85 | Straight pipe runs, high pressure |

C12200 vs C11000 vs C10200
| Grade | Deoxidized | Weldability | Corrosion Resistance | Typical Price | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| C11000 (ETP) | No | Poor – hydrogen embrittlement during brazing | Good | Low | Electrical bus bars, grounding (not for welded systems) |
| C10200 (OFC) | Yes | Good | Very good | High | High-vacuum systems, sensitive electronic cooling |
| C12200 (DHP) | Yes | Excellent – no embrittlement | Excellent | Medium | Water, refrigerant, fuel oil, compressed air, solar |
C12200 is the practical choice for 90% of plumbing and HVAC jobs. You get weldability and corrosion resistance without paying the premium for oxygen-free copper. We've seen contractors switch from C11000 to C12200 after just one leaky joint during pressure testing. It's not worth saving the small difference.

FAQ
1. What is the chemical composition of C12200 copper tube?
C12200 contains a minimum of 99.9% copper and 0.015% to 0.040% phosphorus. The phosphorus removes oxygen during melting to prevent hydrogen embrittlement when brazing. Lead is kept below 0.005%, making it safe for drinking water.
2. Can you provide a Mill Test Certificate with actual batch values?
Yes. Every shipment comes with an MTC showing chemical composition, tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and hardness from your specific heat number. We archive records for five years.
3. What is the difference between C12200 and C1220?
Same material. C12200 is the UNS designation (North America). C1220 is the JIS designation (Japan). Both are DHP copper with 0.015–0.040% phosphorus. We can certify to either standard.
4. Is C12200 approved for drinking water systems?
Yes. It meets NSF/ANSI 61 and WRAS requirements with lead below 0.005%. We can supply certification with your order upon request.
5. What is the maximum working pressure for C12200?
Depends on OD, wall thickness, and temper. For 1/2″ OD x 0.032″ wall (annealed), burst pressure exceeds 2000 psi. Working pressure is typically 1/4 to 1/3 of burst. Send us your size and we will calculate it.
6. Can you cut to custom lengths?
Yes. Straight lengths from 0.5m to 12m. Coils from 15m to 100m. Standard cuts are free on orders over 10 tons. Small cutting fee applies for smaller quantities.
7. What tempers do you supply – soft, half-hard, or hard?
All three. Soft (annealed) bends easily and flares well. Hard (drawn) stays straight and resists dents. Half-hard is in between. Half-hard typically adds 7–10 days lead time.
8. What is your lead time for a 20ft container?
15–25 days for standard sizes after deposit. Stock items (1/2″, 3/4″, 1″, etc.) can ship in 7 days. Non-standard sizes or thick walls take 30–40 days.
9. Do you accept third-party inspection (SGS, BV, TÜV)?
Yes. You arrange the inspection company. We provide samples, test documents, and floor access. Notify us 5 days ahead. No release without your approval.
10. How do you prevent corrosion during ocean shipping?
Plastic caps on both ends for straight lengths. VCI paper and VCI bag wrap for moisture protection. Steel bands secure the bundle. Coils get core inserts and full wrap. All wooden crates are ISPM-15 certified.
How We Pack C12200 Copper Tube
Straight lengths get plastic caps pressed onto both ends to keep out dirt and moisture. The entire bundle is wrapped in VCI paper, then stretch film, then a heavy-duty VCI bag for double moisture protection. Steel bands – three to four per bundle depending on length – hold everything tight so tubes do not rub against each other. Coils get cardboard or plastic core inserts to prevent inner diameter collapse, then VCI film and a polyethylene bag, with four steel bands crisscrossed. All wooden crates and pallets are ISPM-15 certified for export. Waterproof labels show heat number, OD and wall, temper, standard, and length on every bundle and crate.

Our Factory Equipment
Our C12200 copper tube is made in our own factory, not sourced from traders. We run two horizontal continuous casting furnaces that each melt about 50 tons of copper per day, feeding into a 1,630-ton extrusion press that forms hollow shells. From there, three-roll planetary rolling mills reduce wall thickness by up to 90% in a single pass, followed by six chain-type drawing benches that produce final sizes from 6mm to 219mm OD. Bright annealing furnaces with nitrogen atmosphere give soft temper tubes a clean, shiny surface without oxidation. On the finishing end, we have eddy current testers, an ultrasonic wall monitor, and a laser micrometer. Our on-site lab includes a spectrometer, tensile testing machine, and hardness tester. We keep spare parts for all major machines so production does not stop for weeks. We offer video walkthroughs for serious buyers who want to see the line before ordering.
