ASTM B280 C12000 refers to seamless, straight lengths of copper tubing made from Phosphorus Deoxidized, Low Residual Phosphorus Copper (DHP Copper). It is one of the most common and versatile copper tube types for industrial applications.

 

Chemical Composition

Primary Alloy: C12000, which is ≥99.9% copper with a small, controlled addition of phosphorus (0.008 - 0.013% P).

Purpose of Phosphorus: Acts as a deoxidizer during melting, removing oxygen to prevent embrittlement. The "Low Residual P" (DHP) designation means it's suitable for both pressure and non-pressure applications, including brazing and welding.

 

Mechanical & Physical Properties

Temper: Typically supplied in the Annealed (Soft) temper for easy bending and forming, or Drawn (Hard) temper for higher strength and straight lengths.

Annealed Tensile Strength: ~30 ksi (205 MPa) min

Annealed Yield Strength: ~10 ksi (70 MPa) min

Drawn Tensile Strength: ~40 ksi (275 MPa) min

Excellent Thermal Conductivity: Very high heat transfer rate, making it ideal for heat exchangers, condensers, and refrigeration systems.

Excellent Electrical Conductivity: ~85% IACS (International Annealed Copper Standard), suitable for certain electrical grounding and conductive applications.

Ductility & Formability: Excellent, especially in the annealed condition. Can be easily bent, flared, and expanded without cracking.
