The core of a flanged ball valve consists of two main body sections bolted together. The bottom inlet section houses the spherical ball, which is rotated by a stem connected to a handle, gear operator, or actuator mounted on the outside of the valve body.

The ball has carefully machined holes that align with the inlet and outlet flow passages when open, creating a straight, unrestricted path for media flow. Rotating the ball 90 degrees places the solid ball surface against the flow passages, blocking flow for a tight shutoff.

The seating surfaces around the ball provide the sealing mechanism when closed. These metal seats are spring loaded to maintain constant pressure on the ball, preventing leakage even as the seats wear over time.

Upstream and downstream seats with rubber or thermoplastic seals also prevent media from escaping through the ball/stem connection. Seat material selection is based on the temperature, pressure, and chemical compatibility of the intended service.

While flanged ends are the most common, ball valves are available in a variety of pipe end styles:
