Differences Between Brass Tubing and Copper Tubing

Brass tubing and copper tubing are two of the most commonly used types of copper tubing in industrial and domestic applications. While these two types of tubing share similarities in their material composition-both are primarily made from high-quality copper-they differ in their physical and chemical properties, as well as their intended applications.

1: Color

Copper tubing has a purple-red color, while brass tubing is generally golden yellow. The sides of brass tubing may also have some grayish-brown hues.

2: Hardness

Brass tubes have higher hardness than copper tubes. Copper tubes contain a higher percentage of pure copper, while brass tubes incorporate additional chemical elements, including various metallic elements, which collectively enhance their hardness. As a result, copper tubes are suitable for use as conduits for electrical wiring and water supply systems.

3: Usage Temperature

The physical properties of copper are relatively stable. Even in high-temperature environments, it does not undergo catalytic bending. The usage temperature of pure copper tubes can exceed 200 degrees Celsius. However, in high-temperature environments, the surface of brass tubes is prone to oxidation. Therefore, pure copper tubes are typically used in oxygen-generating equipment.

4: Usage Scenarios

Copper tubing is a seamless pipe produced through strict compression. It can be used as water supply pipes, heating pipes, HVAC pipes, and refrigeration pipes. It can also transport pressurized gases and liquids and serve as pressure measurement pipes for instruments. Brass tubing is primarily used in industrial applications and can also transport related liquids and gases. However, due to its lack of corrosion resistance, it is not suitable for transporting all types of substances.

5: Weight

Copper tubing has a higher copper content, resulting in a higher density and greater weight per unit volume. In comparison, brass tubing is relatively lighter in weight and has thinner walls, which may lead to localized deformation during transportation.

6: Health

Copper tubing is manufactured without adding chemical components, so it does not release toxic gases when burned or exposed to high temperatures. Brass tubing, however, contains additional metallic elements that may undergo oxidation reactions at high temperatures. From a health perspective, copper tubing offers a significant advantage.
