How to Verify You Received the Correct C71500 Copper Nickel Alloy Grade
Check the color and use a handheld XRF gun. C71500 (70/30 copper nickel) has a distinct light salmon color, slightly redder than C70600.
| Verification method | What to look for | Acceptance criteria |
|---|---|---|
| Visual color | Light salmon pink | Not yellow (brass) and not dark red (C70600) |
| PMI (XRF) | Nickel 29-33%, Iron 0.4-1.0% | Ni below 28% = wrong grade shipped |
| Stenciled marking | ASTM B111 C71500, heat number | Must match packing list |
| Magnet test | Non-magnetic | Magnetic = iron contamination |

What Wall Thickness Tolerances Are Allowed for C71500 Seamless Tube
±10% of nominal wall thickness per ASTM B111. Measure at four points around the circumference, both ends.
| Nominal wall (BWG) | Nominal inch | Minimum allowed inch | Maximum allowed inch |
|---|---|---|---|
| 14 BWG | 0.083″ | 0.0747″ | 0.0913″ |
| 13 BWG | 0.095″ | 0.0855″ | 0.1045″ |
| 12 BWG | 0.109″ | 0.0981″ | 0.1199″ |
| 11 BWG | 0.120″ | 0.1080″ | 0.1320″ |
| 10 BWG | 0.134″ | 0.1206″ | 0.1474″ |
How to Spot Surface Defects on Copper Nickel Pipe Before Installation
Reject immediately:
Deep scratches or gouges deeper than 10% of wall thickness
Laps or seams (longitudinal folds in the metal surface)
Through-wall pinholes or cracks
Repairable (with credit or discount):
Light surface oxidation (straw to light brown color)
Minor dents less than 5% of OD
| Defect type | Visual appearance | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Lap | Linear fold, often parallel to pipe axis | Reject full length |
| Seam | Fine line, catches fingernail | Reject full length |
| Gouge | Groove with displaced metal | Reject if >10% of wall |
| Dent | Depression without metal loss | Accept if <5% OD |
| Oxidation | Discoloration, no flaking | Accept (clean before use) |
What Documentation Must Come with Every C71500 CuNi Pipe Order
Three documents are mandatory. Do not accept shipment without them.
| Document | What it proves | Red flags |
|---|---|---|
| Mill Test Report (MTR) | Actual chemistry and tensile results from the heat | Handwritten numbers, no heat number, no signature |
| Certificate of Compliance | Pipe meets ASTM B111 | Undated, no standard listed |
| Packing list | Quantities and sizes match order | Discrepancies between list and physical count |
Optional but recommended:
Third-party inspection report (SGS, BV, Intertek)
Positive Material Identification (PMI) report
Ultrasonic test (UT) report for seamless pipe
How to Measure OD and Length Correctly for C71500 Seamless Pipe
Use a caliper for OD. Use a steel tape for length. Do not trust stenciled markings.
| Parameter | Tool | Tolerance (ASTM B111) | Reject if |
|---|---|---|---|
| OD (≤1″) | Digital caliper | ±0.004″ | Outside tolerance on >10% of pipes |
| OD (1-3″) | Digital caliper | ±0.006″ | Outside tolerance on >10% of pipes |
| Length | Steel tape | +1/8″ / -0″ | Any pipe shorter than ordered length |
| Straightness | Straight edge | 0.020″ per foot | Visible bow across 10 ft span |
Can You Request Third-Party Inspection Before Shipment of Copper Nickel Tube
Yes, and we recommend it for large orders over 10 tons.
Third-party inspection (SGS, BV, TUV, Intertek) costs $500-2000 per order depending on location and scope. The inspector visits the mill, witnesses production or final inspection, and issues a report before shipment.
| Inspection scope | What they check | Cost adder |
|---|---|---|
| Basic (dimensional + visual) | OD, wall, length, surface | $500-800 |
| Full (adds PMI + UT) | All of above + alloy check + ultrasonic | $1200-1800 |
| Witnessed hydrotest | Pressure test per ASTM B111 | $800-1200 |
FAQ
Q1: Can you send me a signed mill test report before you ship the pipe?
Yes, for every heat number. We email a scanned MTR before payment of balance. The MTR shows actual chemistry from the melt. No MTR, no shipment.
Q2: What happens if I find a defect after I already paid and took delivery?
You have 14 days from delivery date to file a claim. Take clear photos, save a sample piece, and email our quality department. We will replace defective pipe at our cost or issue a credit. No claims accepted after 14 days or after pipe has been cut, welded, or installed.
Q3: Do you allow a third-party inspector in your factory during production?
Yes, with 2 weeks notice. We host SGS, BV, and Intertek inspectors regularly. You pay their fee and travel. We provide the test equipment and access.
Q4: How do I know the pipe I received is actually seamless and not welded?
Look at the inside surface. Seamless pipe has no longitudinal weld line. Welded pipe (even if ground smooth outside) shows a faint line inside. Also, ASTM B111 requires seamless for most sizes under 6" - check your PO.
Q5: Can you stamp each pipe with my heat number and PO number?
Yes, on full container orders. Standard stencil includes ASTM B111, grade, heat number, and our mill name. Custom stamping adds 1 day to production. No extra charge for standard marking.
Q6: What is your typical rejection rate from customer receiving inspection?
Less than 1% of our shipments get any rejection. Most common issue is cosmetic scratches from trucking, not our production. If the rejection is our fault, we ship replacement within 2 weeks.
Q7: Do you test every single pipe or just batch sample?
Every pipe gets eddy current testing (ET) per ASTM B111. We do not batch sample. Dimensional checks are 100% for OD and wall. Visual inspection is 100%. Tensile and hardness are per heat (batch).
Q8: Can I return excess pipe that I don't need after a project change?
No, we do not accept returns for buyer's over-ordering. You are welcome to sell it to another buyer. We will provide transferable MTRs and documentation to your resale customer.
Q9: What is your policy on shorts (pipes shorter than ordered length)?
We do not ship shorts without prior approval. Every pipe meets the ordered length or is longer. If you receive a short pipe, take a photo with tape measure visible. We will replace it at our cost including freight.
