White copper or copper-nickel (CuNi) is an alloy of copper and nickel, often with small amounts of other elements added for strength, such as iron and manganese. The copper content is usually between 60% and 90%. (Monel is a nickel-copper alloy with a nickel content of at least 52%.)
Despite the high copper content, white copper is silver in color. White copper is highly resistant to saltwater corrosion, so it is used in pipes, heat exchangers and condensers in seawater systems, and in marine hardware. It is sometimes used in propellers, propeller shafts and hulls of high-quality ships. Other uses include military equipment and the chemical, petrochemical and electrical industries.

For decorative purposes, a white copper alloy called nickel silver is common, although it contains additional zinc but no silver.

Another common use of white copper in the 20th century was in silver coins. To achieve this purpose, the typical alloy had a copper-nickel ratio of 3:1, with very little manganese. In the past, real silver coins were debased by white copper, such as the contents of British pound coins from 1947 onwards.

Cupronickel alloys are used in marine applications due to their resistance to seawater corrosion, good machinability, and effectiveness in reducing macrofouling levels [3]. Alloys with compositions ranging from 90% Cu-10% Ni to 70% Cu-30% Ni are commonly used in heat exchanger or condenser tubes in a variety of marine applications.
