Frequently Asked Questions and Answers about Bright Red Copper Seamless Pipe

What is the color code for copper tubing?

Hard-drawn copper or copper alloy tubing for water supply and distribution in addition to the required incised marking shall be marked in accordance with ASTM B88. The colors shall be: Type K, green; Type L, blue; and Type M, red.

What is the color of pure copper?

orange-red

Copper is one of a few metallic elements with a natural color other than gray or silver. Pure copper is orange-red and acquires a reddish tarnish when exposed to air.

Why is some copper red?

The reason copper displays this unique hue lies in its atomic structure. Copper atoms have a single electron in their outermost shell, and when light interacts with these electrons, certain wavelengths are absorbed while others are reflected. Unlike most metals, which reflect most wavelengths evenly and appear silvery or gray, copper reflects more of the red and orange parts of the spectrum.

This property is also shared, to a lesser extent, with gold, which reflects more yellow and red wavelengths. These differences in reflected light explain why these two metals stand out visually among others in the periodic table.

Does red copper tarnish?

Copper tarnishes over time due to a natural chemical reaction between copper and the surrounding environment. Initially, this causes a layer that may appear reddish-brown. Over time, the oxide layer can continue to react with the air and cause a greenish-blue patina.

What is the difference between red copper and regular copper?

The term "red copper" is often used to indicate pure copper, of which T1 is the highest purity grade. Red copper is copper without alloys, yellow copper is an alloy with zinc (brass), and white copper is an alloy with zinc and nickel. The purer it is, the softer and more malleable (easy to bend) it is.
