Magnet wire, or enameled wire, is a copper or aluminum wire coated with a very thin layer of insulation. It is used to make transformers, inductors, motors, generators, speakers, hard drive head actuators, electromagnets, electric guitar pickups, and other applications that require tightly wound insulated wire. The wire itself is usually fully annealed electrolytically refined copper. Aluminum magnet wire is sometimes used in large transformers and motors. The insulation is usually made of a tough polymer film material, rather than glass enamel as the name implies.

The materials best suited for magnet wire applications are pure, unalloyed metals, especially copper. Copper is considered the conductor of choice for magnet wire when factors such as chemical, physical, and mechanical property requirements are considered.

Magnet wire is typically made from fully annealed electrolytically refined copper to allow for tighter winding when making electromagnetic coils. High purity oxygen-free copper grades are used for high temperature applications in reducing atmospheres or for hydrogen-cooled motors or generators.

Aluminum magnet wire is sometimes used as an alternative in large transformers and motors, primarily for economic reasons. Due to the lower electrical conductivity of aluminum wire, a cross-sectional area 1.6 times larger than copper wire is required to achieve comparable DC resistance.
